1844 -- Der Struwwelpeter
Der Struwwelpeter is a German children's book with ten stories of questionable behavior that demonstrates the consequences of misbehavior in an exaggerated way. It was written by Heinrich Hoffmann, a Frankfurt physician and father, who wrote the book because he could not find any titles he wanted to buy for his 3-year-old son for Christmas. It is an early example of a book being created to fill a need.
