Picturing Books Database launches!

We are excited to announce the launch of the Picturing Books Database. This is not just repackaging of data: Our service combines data from dozens of print sources, thousands of picture books, and countless publisher, author, and illustrator websites. We spent over two years developing this tool. At a time of transition for picture books, we think this tool will connect readers with the right picture books. Our goal is to make this service an affordable option for everyone.

A Picture Book Primer

PrimerCover

Find everything you need to know about picture books in this simple and straightforward guide. Explore the different aspects of picture books, beginning with the definition of what a "picture book" is, and then explore the history and technological evolution of the format. Other chapters explore multicultural issues, international picture books, and literacy. Filled with dozens of illustrations, A Picture Book Primer, helps readers better understand and appreciate picture books. The guide includes an exploration of the parts of picture books, types of illustration, layout, design elements, typography, and artistic style and media. An extensive glossary of picture books terms is included to help readers eager to discuss the picture book format with more confidence.

What Booklist had to say:

"The 2008 Caldecott Award winner, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, forced librarians to reexamine the definition of picture books. To help clarify and expand our understanding of this important format, author Matulka has crafted eight easily accessible chapters on all facets of picture books, from their evolution and history, design, and manufacture to the contemporary issues involved in using them. Also included are an extensive glossary, a lengthy bibliography, an up-to-date list of sources, and a picture-book time line. With an interdisciplinary degree in child development, children’s books, reading, and art, Matulka has created a book that is a must-read. Two things that amaze are the clarity of the writing and the price. The illustrations are not in color, but this helps keep the cost down. Whether you are a children’s librarian, a reference librarian at a public or academic library, or an academic who teaches about children’s literature, you need this book."
