In a digital world, picture books offer a respite ... a few moments to stop and appreciate the wonders that print still offers. Though many picture books are available digitally, this site celebrates the original format. The quiet sophistication of picture books offer readers a chance to explore a story from many vantage points: of the reader ... the author ... and the illustrator. We believe picture books lose something when experienced digitally, not just the turning of the pages, but also appreciation for the hundreds of hours authors, illustrators, editors, and designers devote to each one. Picturing Books is a celebration of picture books.
Picturing Books has been online since 1999. In 2010 a fee-based companion site was launched called the Picture Book Database.
Picturing Books was created and is maintained by Denise I. Matulka. She has a B.A. in English and Children's Literature from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a M.S. in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. If she isn't reading picture books, she is probably reading about them.
