National Picture Book Month

earlymind

Picture Book Month is an international initiative to designate November as Picture Book Month. In its first year, founder, Dianne de Las Casas (author & storyteller), and co-founders, Katie Davis (author/illustrator), Elizabeth O. Dulemba (author/illustrator), Tara Lazar (author), and Wendy Martin (author/illustrator) have come together to use their knowledge and expertise to champion picture books.

They, like many picture books enthusiasts, are doing this because, as they so beautifully state, "...the world needs picture books. There’s nothing like the physical page turn of a beautifully crafted picture book."

Join the celebration! Champion picture books!

Farm by Elisha CooperA Plea for Picture Books

At the June 15, 2010 meeting of the New England Children’s Booksellers Advisory Council, Ken Geist, vice-president of Orchard Books and Cartwheel Books, asked independent booksellers to "get behind" picture books. Geist, added that he was not speaking on behalf of Scholastic, but rather sought to inspire others to "…raise the profile of picture books." Members of the meeting offered suggestions, one of which was making 2011 the Year of the Picture Book--and we at Picturing Books are all for that! Held at the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, the event also also featured  Elisha Cooper, whose latest picture book is Farm from Scholastic.

Library of the Early Mind: A Film About Children's Literature

earlymindExploring the effects of books and reading on early childhood, Library of the Early Mind examines how children's literature impacts our lives from an early age. Directed and produced by Edward J. Delaney and co-produced by Steven Withrow. The film features nearly 40 prominent authors and illustrators talking about their work and the creative process
Many of us have a favorite book -- or books -- from childhood that impacted us deeply and continue inform our lives. For Adam Gopnik, one of those books is The Story of Babar, the Little Elephant (1931). The book, which has been under fire for a number of years by scholars, is often viewed as an "implicit endorsement of the civilizing effects of French colonialism." In a New Yorker article, Freeing the Elephants: What Babar Brought (September 22, 2008), Gopnik explores the scholarly criticism regarding Jean de Brunhoff and his famous character, Babar. The article serves as inspiration for the film.

"It has been our dream to help build a museum for children and families, teachers, librarians and scholars; everyone interested in the art of the picture book: a museum to delight, entertain, surprise and educate."  ~Eric and Barbara Carle
